Become a Volunteer
In 1987, HGT started as an all volunteer community based visiting hospice. As a registered charity, HGT provides trained volunteer care and support to individuals living with life-threatening illness or who are in their last stages of living, to their families and to the bereaved. HGT operates as an integral partner of the health care system to ensure that palliative patients are treated with dignity, respect and receive compassionate care.
Over 150 volunteers in the South Georgian Bay area are currently involved in some aspect of HGT, whether its within front-line services, office support or fund-raising. We welcome your interest in becoming a volunteer because it is the volunteer who helps ensure that no family or person in our community need bear the burden of illness, loss or grief alone.
HGT has grown and now provides a residential six-bed Hospice along with additional programs to the residents of Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Clearview and the Blue Mountains.
- Volunteer visiting in-home.
- Adult Bereavement – seminars and individual & group support
Our Volunteer Training Program runs as needed. This training gives the volunteer a chance to examine their own life values, exposes them to active listening techniques; and to be with other trainees as they examine the philosophy of Hospice, its services, privacy and confidentiality, pain & symptom management, ethics, care for the caregivers in our community and other issues in the palliative community. Once trained, our volunteers are matched with a client so that they can begin assisting with requested tasks in the home. Volunteers can establish wonderful therapeutic relationships with their clients and it is to this end that HGT seeks to get involved early-on in the person’s illness.
HGT provides seminars throughout the year to provide on-going support and training in many different capacities. Our volunteers are actively encouraged to submit their hours to the office, to “keep in touch” with the Client Service Coordinator, to attend seminars, conferences and volunteer celebrations. You really do become part of the “Hospice Family” and we will need you more than ever when a palliative/hospice care facility is established within our area.
Please take the time to fill out this electronic form and submit it to our office. Once our office is in receipt of this application we will:
