Annual General Meeting
June 23, 2010
The Annual General Meeting was well attended this year. Starting with a Meet & Greet with HGT’s active volunteers, it progressed to opening remarks by Co-Chairs Ron Emo and Rebecca Wall. Linda Davis, CEO from Collingwood General and Marine Hospital brought greetings from her Board and Committees, reiterating CGMH’s support for a hospice residential home in the South Georgian Bay area.

Bud and Sue Christensen, representing the Collingwood Cinema Club were presented with a plaque thanking the CCC for their tremendous financial support of HGT’s respite suite.
The contributions help provide much needed supplies, meals and other supports for those in community suffering life-threatening illness and who need 1 – 2 week respite stays in the respite suites.
After the reading of Annual Reports, Motions for the adoption of 2009 AGM minutes, Financial report acceptance, Appointment of Auditors and then Adjournment were passed. HGT’s keynote speaker – Marjori Medley – spoke movingly of what it takes to be a volunteer. It was a wonderfully humorous talk that proceeded the recognition of 3, 5, 10, and 15 year Service Awards to 48 volunteers.
The crowning presentation of the evening was the awarding of the June Callwood Award to Rob Fleming. HGT was – and is – so very proud of all of those recognized for awards and certificates.

Town backs bid to find hospice site
Posted By: Morgan Ian Adams
The municipality will be combing through its land parcels to find one suitable for a hospice facility.
On Monday night, Collingwood councillors approved a motion by Councillor Kathy Jeffery directing staff to determine an appropriate location -- in consultation with Hospice Georgian Triangle.
Jeffery's motion followed another motion related to hospice care, this one urging the federal government to fund a national partnership with the provinces, territories, and community organizations, and "provide leadership and vision, standards, best practices, awareness, and support... to ensure integrated quality end-of-life care for all Canadians."
The motion for a local facility noted Hospice Georgian Triangle would like a stand-alone Hospice House to provide end-of-life care. The organization currently provides respite care out of two suites at Sunset Manor.
Rebecca Wall, co-chair of Hospice Georgian Triangle, was thrilled with the decision.
"It's been a vision of ours for a number of years to establish a standalone end-of-life facility," she said. "There have been many challenges in doing that, and the thing that we've said all along is that if we had something tangible -- property, or a building -- then people would really get on board."
Wall said a stand-alone facility, perhaps starting with six beds, would allow Hospice Georgian Triangle to provide actual end-of-life care.
"There are people who are at end-of-life who cannot be at home because they don't have the support system, and yet they also don't need to be in a hospital," she said, noting a facility would provide a home-like atmosphere. "It's all about comfort and care; most Canadians would prefer to be at home in their final days, but the reality is only 30 per cent (die at home)."
Wall said six beds would take pressure off the hospital, which she said is typically dealing with six -- and sometimes more -- palliative-care patients at any one time.
